Despite sanctions, Putin considers Russian manure exports safe

Date:

Despite Western sanctions, Russian President Vladimir Putin sees no threat to the export of Russian fertilizers. Mineral fertilizers for agriculture are in demand in the global market and will certainly be bought, the Kremlin chief said in a video conference broadcast on state television with agricultural sector officials on Tuesday. “No one wants to starve,” he added. Russia has no interest in harming others.

However, to maintain exports, logistics and insurance issues would need to be clarified, Putin said. In early March, Russia announced “temporary” fertilizer export restrictions. The background is Russian delivery problems as several international shipping companies have stopped loading at ports in the country. In addition, companies refuse to insure Russian cargo.

Port Closures for Moscow
Russia is one of the largest fertilizer exporters in the world. According to Russian customs officials, the country exported about 37.6 million tons of manure in 2021, worth about $12.5 billion (€11.3 billion).

On Tuesday, the EU announced new sanctions against Moscow over Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, including port closures. The European Commission has announced that sanctions against Russian ships will not affect the transport of agricultural products, energy resources and humanitarian goods.
