In view of the still very high Corona waves, Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) called on the population to be cautious shortly before Christmas. He said hygiene measures should be observed and tested, especially before meetings with vulnerable and elderly people during the holidays.
“When I visit my sick mother, I put on a mask,” he gave an example. It is “a matter of common sense,” the minister told the APA. “If older people find themselves in situations where people clearly have a cold or don’t know exactly what they have, that (wearing a mask, mind you) will also be appropriate.”
‘Wearing a face mask makes sense in busy metros’
And: “Of course it makes sense to wear a face mask in situations such as when the subway is full or there are many people in one place. “If you are not feeling well or to prevent infection,” said the minister.
Testing is also an option – if you have symptoms – as Rauch said: “If there are people who clearly have a cold, it might be wiser to get a test,” he said. “My advice and recommendation is simple: if people are already ill, ill or particularly vulnerable, then of course be considerate.”
The current Corona wave has reached its peak
At the same time, the minister points out that although the current high corona wave has probably reached its peak, there are also other pathogens in circulation or are currently on the rise. “We should simply expect these viral diseases all winter long,” he referred to the flu and RSV in addition to Corona.
The day before, molecular biologist Ulrich Elling had explained that although the peak of the corona wave had probably been reached, the risk of infection remained very high: “There is still an extremely high amount of virus circulating and it is still very easy to become infected.”
Smoke: Take an antigen test before the meeting
He also pointed out that a similar number of people become infected during the flattening wave as during the construction wave. The expert recommended, especially before Christmas celebrations, to reduce contacts in advance and to carry out an antigen test before the gatherings.
