Five arrests – Schwechat: Dogs sniff out 50 kilos of cannabis

Date:

The police dog “Pitt von Taffatal” and the customs dog “Pero” sniffed out 23 pieces of mail containing approximately 50 kilos of cannabis herb at Vienna Airport in Schwechat. The four-legged investigators played their part by ensuring that drug group investigators uncovered a transatlantic drug smuggling route, the Lower Austria State Police Directorate said. This resulted in five arrests.

“Pitt von Taffatal” and “Pero” demonstrated their fine noses between July 4 and September 9. Investigators then found four Malaysian nationals between the ages of 34 and 59, and a 38-year-old Chinese national. The quintet was sent by the clients to Vienna to collect the drug packages, pack them airtight in suitcases in specially rented apartments and then smuggle the cannabis herb themselves to Germany, England and the Netherlands, police said.

65 pieces of mail to Austria
With the support of the Federal Criminal Police, an investigation could be conducted into a group of perpetrators of predominantly Chinese origin who operated from Canada. The organization was ultimately allocated 65 pieces of mail to Austria with a total weight of 220 kilos and a street value of approximately 2.2 million euros.

Sentenced to several years in prison
The four Malaysian suspects and the Chinese citizen were arrested with the support of the Lower Austrian State Criminal Police and the Vienna State Criminal Police, some of them while collecting the mail or just before the cannabis herb was transported onward. According to the police, only the 38-year-old has not confessed. All five men were taken to the local prison on the orders of the Korneuburg Public Prosecutor’s Office and have since been sentenced to several years in prison, according to state police headquarters.
