Wind gusts around 100 km/hour – We will have to deal with stormy weather until Christmas

Date:

Only a few more days until Christmas is finally here. But before that, we still have turbulent weather ahead. A storm is raging across the country and rain showers are also expected. More than a meter of snow can be expected in some parts of the mountains. The avalanche danger is also increasing.

This is what expert Nikolas Zimmermann from UBIMET predicts. Rain will already fall in the north on Thursday and the Alpine region is also under the influence of a storm called “Zoltan”. The wind is blowing strong to strong on the north side of the Alps and will increase further from the afternoon. There are also stormy gusts from Lake Constance to the Vienna Basin. In the evenings it usually becomes stormy on the north side of the Alps.

The situation is likely to deteriorate during the night
According to the fire brigade, there have not yet been any operations due to storm damage in the federal capital. However, the situation could deteriorate on Friday evening. There are currently warnings for light storms in the states of Salzburg, Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Burgenland and Vienna. However, heavy storms are feared in Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Styria. Heavy snowfall is likely there.

Gusts of around 100 km/h are expected
There will be a pronounced north-westerly situation on Friday. Large amounts of rain and snow will fall in the Alps at the beginning of the weekend and also on Saturday. It is also becoming increasingly stormy: the wind is increasing slightly and blowing strongly with showers from the west on the north side of the Alps and in some valleys of the Northern Alps. At night, heavy wind gusts of around 100 km/h can occur from Upper Austria to the Vienna Basin. There are even hurricane winds on the mountains.

Heavy snowfall in Upper Styria
On Saturday it will probably only remain dry in the south, while rain and stormy winds will pass over the other parts of the country. The snowfall line is initially between 700 and 1000 meters, but during the day it drops to some valleys in the north and east and snows heavily, especially in Upper Styria.

The avalanche danger increases during the weekend
“In total, by the 4th of Advent there will be 50 to 100 centimeters of fresh snow on the mountains from the Arlberg to Upper Styria, or slightly more in regions such as the Dachstein area,” says Zimmermann. The fresh snow is heavily supplied by the stormy winds, causing a high risk of avalanches over the weekend.

On Christmas Eve a maximum of 15 degrees
According to Zimmermann, on Christmas Eve, mild air will spread over Austria from the west and at Christmas temperatures will even rise to 15 degrees! This means that, for example, one of the warmest Christmas days in the history of measurements is taking place in Vienna and St. Pölten.
