The reputation of the Internet has suffered considerably in recent years. The medium once defined by funny cat videos has become a place of hatred and excitement, but also of false beauty ideals. This has an impact on the psyche – at least that is the general gist. But what impact does the internet really have on our mental well-being?
In 2005, the year YouTube was born, it was estimated that only 17 percent of the world’s population used the Internet. Today, 18 years later, this is already 67 percent, or approximately 5.4 billion people worldwide, according to the latest figures from the International Telecommunications Union in Geneva.
However, with the rapid spread of the Internet, there is also a growing fear that its widespread adoption – and the technologies it enables, such as online games, smartphones and social media – is actively harming rather than helping young users in particular.
