Whether it’s a semester abroad or a gap year: many young people celebrate Christmas abroad. How do they spend the time?
Christmas is considered a family celebration. That is why it is often extra difficult to spend the holidays abroad alone.
19-year-old Sara F. is making the most of it: During her gap year she recently volunteered at a kindergarten in Hanoi, Vietnam, and is now using the last weeks of her stay to travel.
She has a lot planned for Christmas: “I’m going to celebrate with friends I’ve met. We want to eat good food and play games in the evening,” she says. She also wants to watch Christmas movies. Sara is looking forward to it, even though this is year a little different than in recent years.
Student Luca R. will also be celebrating Christmas far away from his family this year. The 22-year-old is doing a semester abroad in Massachusetts. He spends the holidays with a friend and her family.
The program is busy: “On the 24th we play ‘Kabouter’ and get food from a Chinese restaurant. The next morning there are presents, we all cook together and all family members come through the day.”
The two young people show that, although they celebrate Christmas differently than usual, they still feel at home.
