Antonio Conte, Tottenham coach, is not worried about Harry Kane after the England captain missed the penalty that prevented the ‘pross’ from forcing a draw against France in the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Qatar (2-1).
Kane converted the first penalty of the match, beating his team-mate Hugo Lloris, but just minutes from time he fired a second over the crossbar, ending England’s hopes of victory in the second World Cup in their history.
Asked if he was worried that this mistake would affect Kane psychologically on his return to Tottenham, Conte told reporters: “No, actually because we are talking about a world-class striker.”
Conte and his defeat in the 1994 World Cup final
“In football you can have exciting moments and you can also have moments where you are a bit disappointed because you missed a penalty, the second penalty, after the first one he scored,” Conte added about Kane .
“In my case, when I was a player, I never missed a penalty because I didn’t take one. Never! Because I was a real disaster there. But because of a penalty, I lost a World Cup against Brazil. When you live this moment, you are really disappointed.” recalls Conte, who came to life from the bench in the final that Italy lost to the ‘canarinha’ in the United States in a shootout (0-0 and 3-2).
“Certainly at first you are sad, but then you know you have to go on. Football gives you the opportunity to have other opportunities to enjoy football… To be honest, I’m not worried about him. I saw him very well in these two days with us”, Conte said of a Kane who returned to training at Tottenham this week after the break for the World Cup and is preparing for Monday’s game against at Brentford on the traditional Premier League day on Boxing Day.
