Accident in Slovenia – Two railway workers hit by a train and killed

Date:

Two people were killed in a serious train accident near Postojna (Slovenia) on Thursday. A passenger train crashed into a group of railroad workers. Two of them died at the scene of the accident and two other men were seriously injured.

The accident took place at 9:20 am at the Rakitnik level crossing south of Postojna. At the time, nine workers were carrying out urgent maintenance work on the route. According to the national railway company Slovenske Zeleznice, the work can usually be carried out between train passages.

However, that was not possible on Thursday morning. A passenger train heading towards Sezana struck the railway workers. They would not have been informed that a train was approaching.

Replacement bus service set up
Originally there were media reports of a total of four seriously injured people, later there was talk of two deaths and two seriously injured. An injured person was reportedly flown by helicopter to the university hospital in Laibach. According to the director of the railway infrastructure company, the lives of the two employees are not in danger. They suffered broken legs. Other workers escaped with scratches.

It is still unknown how the accident could have happened. The railway line will remain closed for the time being until there is clarity. A replacement bus service has now been set up.
