Schimmel & Co. – Decay in the Karl-Marx-Hof despite recent renovation

Date:

Structural defects in buildings of religious communities endanger the health of the residents. The renovation was not so long ago. The FPÖ calls for an urgent solution to the complaints.

The famous Karl-Marx-Hof in Döbling is almost a hundred years old. The signs of the times are especially noticeable inside. Tenant Andre G. has lived in Vienna’s most famous municipal building since his youth and has experienced its decay up close. He never wanted to leave, but the defects in his apartment could soon force him to do so.

In concrete terms, mold has been growing in the 90-square-meter apartment for several years, especially in the bathroom and separate toilet. In addition, the plaster on the walls is crumbling. “We live here with our two children, I’m worried about their health,” says the 40-year-old.

Wiener Wohnen blames tenants for mold
The tenant contacted Wiener Wohnen some time ago, but the concerns are not yet being taken seriously enough. Instead of a sustainable solution, the family only received information about alleged incorrect ventilation behaviour. “I would understand if we had a small apartment and no window in the bathroom, but there must be more to it,” says the employee. The G. family is not alone with the problem; their neighbours also complain about similar problems. It is also worrying that cracks are visible in the walls of the stairwell; the stairs in the stairwell had to be re-clad to prevent the risk of collapse.

For district party leader Klemens Resch (FPÖ), the conditions in the city’s largest municipal building are unbearable: “It is unbelievable how people are being let down by Viennese housing. The fact that the affected residents are being bombarded with useless ventilation tips is the bottom of the barrel.” He calls for an immediate renovation of the historically and architecturally important building. And what does Wiener Wohnen say about it?

“We received reports of mold in 2015 and 2017, but we have no current report of mold. We have made an appointment for viewing with the tenants involved for Friday – only then can further steps be taken.”

However, it is noted that the Karl-Marx-Hof residential complex was extensively renovated between 2010 and 2020; the measures amounted to around 50 million euros. This could probably not solve all the problems.
