Punching in a bikini – revealing climate glues causes a stir in Vienna

Date:

One thing is certain: the latest generation of climate adhesives is causing a stir. That was also the case on Wednesday evening at the Christmas market in the Türkenschanzpark in Vienna. The activists gathered there in bikinis at the punch stand. Why? “It was already 17 degrees in December,” says one of the members happily. Of course this statement has an ironic undertone…

Drinking punch in a bikini: With this campaign, the Last Generation caused a stir at the Christmas market in the Türkenschanzpark on Wednesday. “This may look funny now, but when we reach a point where the climate crisis is unavoidable, we will no longer be able to laugh,” one of the activists emphasizes in a video contribution from the group.

“Finally drinking mulled wine in your swimsuit”
With their action on Wednesday, the activists satirically show how rosy many people imagine the consequences of global warming: “It was already 17 degrees in December – I can finally drink mulled wine in my swimsuit – thank you Karl Nehammer! ”, says film student Emilia, with joy and gratitude, the Chancellor addressed herself with an ironic undertone.

Activist explains the consequences of global warming
Press spokesperson Anna Freund explains what three degrees of average global warming actually means: “Heat, drought, floods and mudslides reduce the habitable and usable land area, and social and military conflicts threaten hunger and infectious diseases. Our democracy and the rule of law are in danger.” She criticizes the fact that Austria is heading towards these plus three degrees, instead of meeting the agreed climate goals by implementing the Climate Council’s recommendations.

New, glue-free form of protest
“We make people laugh,” she explains the new, glue-free form of protest of the last generation, “but when you read that the government is fueling the climate catastrophe with fossil subsidies instead of letting them expire as recommended by the Climate Organization Council, you are freezing laughing despite this year’s record temperatures,” Freund said. Because if the temperature on earth were three degrees, no one would laugh anymore…

Research against 52 climate adhesives
It is uncertain whether the new protest routes also have something to do with the ongoing investigations against some activists of the group on suspicion of serious material damage (Article 126 of the Criminal Code) and the formation of a criminal organization (Article 278 of the Code of Criminal Law). Criminal code). On Thursday, the Vienna public prosecutor’s office announced concrete figures. Accordingly, proceedings are underway against 52 people, Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Nina Bussek explained – “including 29 suspects under Article 278 of the Criminal Code”.

Until now, the Public Prosecution Service had only spoken about “a case against several people”. The Last Generation spoke on Thursday about an “expansion of the investigation”. The proceedings are linked to November’s protests by the climate protection group. The demonstrators used a mixture of sand and super glue to cement themselves on the southern highway (A2) and the Vienna Ring.
