A woman was killed by a 20-meter-high Christmas tree at a Christmas market in Belgium. The pine tree could not withstand a strong gust of wind, reports the Belgian news agency Belga.
The tree fell on three people on Thursday evening, one of whom died a short time later in hospital from serious injuries. It initially remained unclear whether the enormous, festively decorated Christmas tree was poorly secured.
Christmas market closed after accident
The accident site at the Christmas market in Oudenaarde was cordoned off and investigated after the accident. Based on an eyewitness, the VRT reports that immediately after the accident, about twenty people lifted the tree and freed two of the victims. The third person was subsequently rescued by rescuers.
