136 UN staff dead – Guterres commemorates the dead and takes action against Israel

Date:

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has paid tribute to the United Nations staff killed in the Gaza war. “Within 75 days, 136 of our colleagues in Gaza have been murdered,” Guterres wrote on the online platform X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday. Nothing like this has ever happened before in the history of the UN.

“Most of our staff have been forcibly removed from their homes,” the Secretary General wrote. He expressed his appreciation for them and for the thousands of humanitarian workers who risked their lives for civilians in the Gaza Strip.

Criticism of Israel
In another post, Guterres again criticized Israel’s actions in the conflict. “The way Israel is carrying out this offensive is creating enormous obstacles to the distribution of humanitarian aid in Gaza,” he wrote. In order to effectively deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, we need employees who can work safely.

After days of fighting, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Friday calling for an increase in humanitarian aid for around two million people in need in the Gaza Strip. However, the most powerful UN body adopted a compromise text in New York without the call for an immediate ceasefire that Guterres had hoped for.

The ground offensive continues
The Gaza war was sparked by the worst massacre in Israel’s history, which Hamas terrorists and other extremist groups carried out in Israel on October 7. Israel responded with massive airstrikes and launched a ground offensive in late October. Given the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the closed coastal area, Israel has recently come under increasing international pressure.
