During a firefighting operation at a woodchip warehouse in Upper Austria, a wooden beam fell on the head of the 34-year-old operations manager. The man fell unconscious and had to be rescued by his comrades. The seriously injured commander is now being treated in the intensive care unit of a hospital.
On Saturday morning around 2 a.m., a fire broke out for unknown reasons in the wood chip storage area on the top floor of a barn in Schildorn.
Building on fire
When the owner (67) noticed the fire, the building was already completely on fire. A Czech tenant (52), who lives in the apartment complex next to the shed, also became aware of the fire. He managed to wake up two other residents (67 and 72). He then made sure they got to safety. The Czech suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital.
130 helpers employed
A total of nine fire brigades with 130 emergency workers were at work for hours. To better extinguish the wood chips, the building had to be opened with an excavator. The charred wooden beams of the roof structure were also demolished. Visibility at the scene of the fire was very poor. Suddenly a beam fell to the ground.
Injured person in intensive care
Unfortunately, fire chief Thomas S. could no longer ignore it and was seriously hit in the head. He fell unconscious. The 34-year-old was rescued by comrades and paramedics with a dresser. He is now in intensive care at Ried Hospital, but was available again on Saturday morning.
