This year, the Latvian government seized more than 270 cars owned by drunk drivers and handed them over to Ukraine. The civilian population could use the vehicles, it was said.
In principle, the cars are freely available to the warring country. The vehicles had a total value of more than 900,000 euros, Latvia said on Monday. The cases of 34 other cars worth more than 160,000 euros are currently being investigated. The decision to seize vehicles from driving Latvians on behalf of Ukraine was taken in February.
Citizens’ cars are regularly destroyed in Russian air strikes or in fighting between troops. At the same time, people depend on the vehicles, for example for supply purposes or to escape from areas particularly affected by the war.
Air raids on Christmas night
The anti-aircraft force in Kiev announced on Monday that the country had also been attacked with drones and missiles on Christmas night. Many were shot. Most drone attacks are said to have taken place in the Odessa area on the Black Sea. Debris from the crashed drones caused damage to port infrastructure and to an unused administration building and storage areas. It is unlikely that any injuries were reported.
Zelensky: Don’t give up on defense
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously called for no slackening of national defense over Christmas (see video above). This year, for the first time, Christmas will be officially celebrated in Ukraine on December 25, but due to the current martial law, the holiday was not work-free. Many Ukrainians continue to celebrate Christmas on January 7, as in Russia, according to the calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church. The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.
