The University of Innsbruck registered an unauthorized data query for student master data last Thursday. According to the institution, almost 23,000 datasets have been downloaded without permission. Appropriate countermeasures have been taken. It is not the first cyber attack.
A few days ago, the University of Innsbruck fell victim to hackers again. 23,000 student master data have been illegally downloaded. The university states that it has already taken the necessary countermeasures and has informed all affected students and the Data Protection Commission.
The police were also involved. For tactical reasons, no further information can be provided about the background and possible motives of the perpetrators.
Personal information and email addresses
In addition to personal data such as name or place of residence, the stolen master data also contains the university email address. “There is no need for action on the part of the affected students, but they have been asked to pay special attention to possible phishing attempts in the near future and, if necessary, to forward these suspected cases to the experts of the Central ICT employ. (ZID) at the University of Innsbruck,” the university said.
Not the first cyber attack
These types of attacks are nothing new for the University of Innsbruck. Last year, hackers gained access to the medical university’s server and published data on the darknet. And at the beginning of this year, cybercriminals also attacked the university. However, this attack ended lightly.
