One person has been killed in an incident at an internationally controversial military facility in Iran. An “accident” occurred on Wednesday evening (local time) at one of the Defense Ministry’s “research units” at its Parchin facility near Tehran, the Iranian ministry said on Thursday. An “engineer” died and another worker was injured.
The engineer had “become a martyr,” the ministry said. For the Ministry of Defense, the state news agency Irna had reported the accident in Parchin and wrote about an “industrial accident”. Neither IRNA nor the ministry gave any information about the cause of the incident.
Nuclear Weapons Development Tests
Iran has historically been suspected of conducting military tests in Parchin that may be part of a nuclear weapons development program. Tehran has repeatedly denied this. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had called for an on-site inspection in 2015. The Iranian leadership initially refused, but later IAEA chief Yukiya Amano was allowed to inspect the facility.
In June, a gas tank exploded in the Parchin region. No deaths were reported, but the blast was felt up to 30 kilometers away in Tehran. Iran’s nuclear program has been the target of sabotage and cyber attacks for years.
Several key scientists involved were also murdered.
blame Israel
The Iranian government blames its nemesis Israel for this. Israel does not rule out the use of military means to prevent Iran from developing an atomic bomb. Tehran has always denied that its nuclear program intends to develop nuclear weapons, but has stated that it pursues only peaceful goals.
