There are countless emotional moments while working in the hospital. Particularly moving and unusual for the team from the intensive care unit ICU 3 of the Klagenfurt hospital was the visit to a graduation ball, to which a patient was accompanied.
“I have never experienced anything like this in my many years here,” says Judith Lepuschitz, department manager of ICU 3 at Klagenfurt hospital, about the most moving moment of 2023.
Artificial respiration, birthdays and graduation balls: an intense autumn
On October 10, Johanna O. was admitted to hospital with severe pneumonia. The young woman required intensive care and artificial respiration. After a few weeks, the first successes of the treatment became apparent. On November 2, Johanna celebrated her 21st birthday in intensive care. Her greatest wish: “I want to go to my Matura ball, which will take place on November 18.”
“That was a big challenge for all of us. At that moment, none of us could estimate whether we would be able to fulfill Johanna’s sincere wish,” the ICU 3 team remembers.
With the support of the doctors and nurses, but especially thanks to Johanna’s iron will, the student managed to make her dream come true. “Johanna’s mother brought the ball gown to the hospital and our staff provided the perfect hairstyle and makeup,” said the department manager.

In order to keep an eye on Johanna every minute and to respond quickly in case of emergency, Primarius Rudolf Likar organized the intensive care transport vehicle with a doctor and an anesthetist. “In addition, two nursing staff from our team accompanied the patient to the evening event,” reports Lepuschitz. Two and a half hours followed full of emotions that none of those involved will ever forget.
In mid-December, Johanna was finally able to leave the Klagenfurt clinic.
