Former President of the European Commission Jacques Delors has died. “He died this morning in his sleep at his home in Paris,” Delors’ daughter Martine Aubry said Wednesday. The former politician was 98 years old.
The French soldier headed the Brussels authority from 1985 to 1995 and was considered the driving force behind the European internal market and the creation of the European Union in 1993. Delors started his European political career as a Member of Parliament in 1979. From 1981 he served for three years long Minister of Economy and Finance in France. In 1985 he took over the leadership of the European Commission.
Delors’ tenure included the abolition of personal and property controls; the Maastricht Treaty, which provided for a common currency; and Austria’s accession to the EU in 1995.
Macron: “Fighter for human justice”
French President Emmanuel Macron described Delors on Platform X as a “fighter for human justice.” His dedication, ideals and justice would inspire forever.

Numerous other former and current EU leaders also commented on Delors’ death. “With the death of Jacques Delors, the European Union has lost a giant,” wrote European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.
