The situation is precarious: tens of thousands of people in Gaza are seeking protection in hospitals

Date:

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tens of thousands of civilians in the Gaza Strip are seeking protection from acts of war in hospitals. 50,000 people gathered at Shifa hospital in Gaza city and 14,000 at Al-Amal hospital in the southern Gaza Strip, the organization said on Wednesday on X. It deployed a team on the ground.

The delegation, together with representatives of the UN children’s fund UNICEF and another organization, were able to deliver relief supplies to the hospitals, the statement said. On the way to hospitals, the WHO team observed tens of thousands of people fleeing the fierce Israeli attacks on foot, on mules or in cars. In the hospitals, WHO staff would have to climb over patients and people seeking protection who were camping everywhere.

Offer only at a minimum level
According to the WHO, 13 hospitals across the Gaza Strip are currently functioning partially, two at a minimal level and 21 not at all. There are major concerns that new refugee flows will put further pressure on health facilities in the southern Gaza Strip. “This forced mass movement of people will lead to increased overcrowding and an increased risk of infectious diseases, making the distribution of humanitarian aid even more difficult,” the statement quoted a WHO official on the ground.

The Gaza War was sparked by the worst massacre in Israel’s history, carried out by terrorists from Hamas and other extremist groups on October 7 in Israel, near the Gaza border. More than 1,200 people were killed on the Israeli side. Israel responded with massive air strikes and a ground offensive.

Hundreds of thousands on the run
On instructions from the Israeli army, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled the disputed north to the south, where fierce fighting is now taking place. According to the Palestinian aid organization UNRWA, almost 1.9 million people are on the run – more than 80 percent of the population. Given the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the closed coastal area, Israel is under increasing international pressure.
