A car caught fire on Großarler Landesstraße (Salzburg) on Wednesday. An off-duty police officer with presence of mind took advantage of the snow to contain the fire to the bottom.
A 79-year-old from Pongau was traveling on the L109 in the municipality of Großarl on Wednesday afternoon when the underside of his black Mercedes caught fire. The driver behind him, an off-duty police officer, immediately called the fire brigade.
Police officer had a brilliant idea
The 79-year-old parked the car on the side of the road. The police officer immediately grabbed the snow shovel from a nearby garage and other helpers did the same.
No injuries
Together they put enough snow under the vehicle to keep the fire under control. When the Großarl fire brigade arrived with four vehicles and 28 emergency services, they extinguished the remaining flames and cleared spilled liquids from the street. No one was injured.
