Riots broke out during a Kurdish protest during the 100th anniversary celebrations in Vienna. The Turkish ambassador told krone.tv that he was shocked by the escalation: “They were really violent. It could have been my turn!”
There were wild scenes in Vienna-Wieden during a concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. A video circulating on social networks shows an embassy security guard trying to pull demonstrators from the “Defend Kurdistan” organization away from the entrance. One of the embassy employees even kicks someone who is sitting.
Police officer pulls gun
The scene escalates further when a police officer suddenly pulls out his gun. The reason for this is said to have been a stone thrown at a metal fence. The Vienna police explain that the colleague, after “realizing the situation,” “immediately put it back in his holster.” Other protesters also tried to enter the location.
“Could have been hit”
This circumstance worries Turkish Ambassador Ozan Ceyhun. “I don’t know if they would have offered me blows,” he explains in an interview with crown.tv. He was grateful for the intervention of security officers and the Vienna police. It was also clear to him: “This was not a Kurdish demonstration. These are the supporters of the PKK, a terrorist organization.”
Protesters: “100 years of Türkiye – no reason to celebrate”
The demonstration was organized by the organization “Defend Kurdistan”. The demonstrators’ banners read, among other things: “100 years of Turkey – no reason to celebrate.” According to the broadcast, they demonstrated against Turkey „wages war against the Kurds in Rojava by all means necessary or supports Azerbaijan (sic!) in expelling the Armenian population from Artsakh.”
