Now it has been solved: the police officer (39) who shot his colleague in the basement of the Styrian state police headquarters during a training session in September last year is charged with murder by gross negligence. The Graz public prosecutor’s office has filed a corresponding criminal charge.
What was suspected in police and legal circles has now happened: the 39-year-old trainer who accidentally shot a colleague (27) during training in the basement of the Styrian police station in September last year, must answer to the criminal court. “The police take full responsibility. A criminal complaint has been filed for grossly negligent murder,” said Christian Kroschl, spokesman for the Graz prosecutor’s office.
Service weapon not exchanged
The accident happened while training a triple formation. Two police officers go forward, one secures to the back. The second man in formation must keep his gun on the ground at all times. Because an unfortunate stumble can be enough and a shot goes off.
The defendant wanted to demonstrate exactly this scenario to his protégés – but had forgotten to exchange his edged weapon for a training weapon before training. The shot fired hit the victim in the back. The 27-year-old died on the spot despite immediate first aid measures.
Andreas Kleinbichler, the trainer’s lawyer, lets the “Krone” once again express his client’s regret: “No judgment can do justice to the tragedy of this fateful mistake. My client is aware of this despite his extensive confession. He knows that he took a son from a family. At the trial, as before, he will continue to express his guilt and deep regret.”
