Tourists have been allowed again on the Italian island of Capri in the Mediterranean since Sunday. After problems with the drinking water supply on the island popular with holidaymakers, the central pipe from the mainland was repaired – water flowed regularly through the pipe again on Sunday evening.
The island’s mayor, Paolo Falco, therefore lifted an entry ban for tourists that had previously been imposed in an official regulation.
Tourist stop with exceptions
Following a defect in the water main that supplies Capri with water from the mainland, the island’s supply to the Gulf of Naples collapsed on Saturday. Only residents of the island were allowed to go ashore.
In this emergency, the island has no water supply that can meet the needs of residents and tourists, according to an ordinance. The supply came exclusively from local water reservoirs.
After intense pressure from hoteliers and tour operators, Falco has issued a second regulation exempting tourists with reservations at hotels with adequate water supplies.
Long queues at the ticket counters
After the tourist ban was imposed, long lines formed at the ticket counters on the mainland for the ferries to Capri. Ships that had already left for Capri were ordered by the authorities to return.
According to the Prefect of Naples, Michele Di Bari, the reason for the water pipe failure was an air bubble in the pipe. The trapped air blocked the flow. According to Di Bari, the responsible water supplier Gori worked very hard on the repairs and was only able to solve the problem late in the evening.
