Following the explosion in a warehouse near the 1936-founded ‘aluminium’ factory in Bolzano, South Tyrol, one of six seriously injured workers (31) died in hospital in Verona on Friday evening.
After the explosion, the Senegalese man was flown by helicopter to Verona, where he died on Saturday evening from severe burns.
Four seriously injured people were taken by helicopter to hospitals in Padua, Verona and Murnau in Bavaria after the explosion. The minor injuries were treated in Bolzano.
Workers went up in flames
The explosion took place about half an hour after midnight on Friday in the factory’s warehouse, located in the industrial area of Bolzano. Some workers were caught in the flames. According to an uninjured worker, the explosion occurred in one of the aluminum melting chambers.
Building seized
The cause is not yet known, but according to media reports this happened during the casting and cooling phase of molten aluminum. The Public Prosecution Service has started an investigation. The building was seized on the orders of the judicial authorities.
