Marathon rescue mission in the mountains! Seven hours after a 32-year-old was injured in the Totes Gebirge (Upper Austria), he arrived safely in the valley. Thanks to the mountain rescue team, which had to carry out the rescue operation for the “blown up” helicopter “the old-fashioned way”.
It was on a sunny Sunday at 3:50 PM in Grünau when 32-year-old Berthold S. from Scharnstein slipped during the descent from the Welserhütter at the foot of the large creek and injured his ankle at about 1,550 meters above sea level. Not really a problem, but a big problem in the mountains because going down independently was no longer an option.
Strong Föhn storm
He alerted the local manager of the mountain rescue department via mobile phone. The first thought: rescue from the air. But due to the heavy Föhn storm, the rescue helicopter that would have saved the victim with a rope could not take off.
Difficult recovery
So 33 mountain rescuers from Grünau set out. In the meantime, night fell, because it had already gotten dark an hour earlier due to the time change.
Complete darkness
At 7:50 p.m., the removal of the victim, who was secured on a mountain stretcher, began in complete darkness. Two mountain rescue doctors attended and treated the 32-year-old, who also received an IV. The helpers also had to abseil themselves and the patient in parts.
It took until 11 p.m. for the rescue unit and its protege to arrive safely in the valley, where the mountain victim was handed over to the Red Cross for transport to hospital. The operation was documented by the helpers and the photos show how difficult the rescue was, but also how calmly the mountain rescuers, who always had a smile on their faces, acted.
