The Red Sea crisis has led to a shortage of natural rubber that will affect the staff of the four factories that the multinational has in Spain for two days, including the two Basque ones. Each factory determines the two specific days on which production will stop.
The four Michelin factories in Spain, including Vitoria-Gasteiz and Lasarte-oria, will have to deactivate their shifts for two days from tomorrow until January 15 due to the lack of natural rubber from the Red Sea crisis.
Sources from the management of the Vitoria plant, the largest that the multinational has in Spain with almost 3,500 employees, have confirmed this cessation of activities related to natural rubber, a fundamental raw material for tire production.
Although they have not specified on which specific days the shifts will be deactivated in each of the factories in Vitoria, Lasarte-Oria (Gipuzkoa), Valladolid and Aranda de Duero (Burgos), they have indicated that from now on the shutdowns will take place next Friday . until January 14.
It will be each of the four affected factories that will determine the specific days of the production stops.
The problem lies in the lack of security for maritime transport in the Red Sea due to attacks by Houthi rebels on ships passing through it as a result of the war between Israel and Palestine, forcing suppliers to use other routes to reach Europe areas, such as the Cape. from Good Hope in South Africa, a much longer route causing delays in receiving rubber.
This situation is added to the measures agreed a few weeks ago due to the drop in demand, which led the multinational to announce that it will take non-traumatic measures, such as encouraged sick leave and childcare contracts, to reduce the surplus of 150 tackle people. workers at the factory from Vitoria-Gasteiz.
