A 75-year-old from the Horn district showed her long nose on the phone to fraudsters posing as police officers. Because the retiree was well informed and did not fall for the scam. Horn’s police chief notes the importance of bringing these issues to the public’s attention to increase awareness.
The woman from the Horn district responded perfectly and immediately called the emergency number after being called on the landline by “German police officers”. Real police officers immediately drove to the elderly woman. She described that the “police officers” claimed to be investigating a burglary at the neighboring house. Three Romanians were arrested and a list of addresses of other targets was found, which also included the pensioner’s house.
75-year-old demanded police captain
She was then asked whether she wanted to keep cash at home or take it to the bank. The woman had serious doubts – because what police officer would request such information over the telephone? She then requested a meeting with the police commander of the Horn district, Birgit Geitzenauer, whereupon the fraudsters immediately hung up.
Reports sensitize citizens
The police chief is also happy that the woman reacted with such presence of mind. She wants to emphasize the very good cooperation between the media and the police, because: “Publishing such cases ensures that citizens are increasingly less likely to fall for such scams.” Thanks to the spread of attempted and, unfortunately, completed crimes, future cases would be prevented, Geitzenauer says. Increasing public awareness is important.
