Argentina’s largest trade union has called for a general strike in protest against new President Javier Milei’s radical economic reforms. The strike will take place on January 24, the CGT trade union federation announced on Thursday.
Union leader Héctor Daer also announced a protest demonstration in front of the Argentine parliament during the debate on Milei’s first bill. Her decrees and bills for a comprehensive deregulation of the economy would be aimed “against society as a whole,” according to Daer (photo below). Milei wants to ‘concentrate all political power with the president’.
Nationwide “shock therapy” promised
When he took office on December 10, Milei promised the heavily indebted South American country “shock therapy.” Firstly, the ultra-liberal right-wing populist has introduced a decree with which he wants to change or abolish 350 existing laws, for example in the field of rental and labor law. To reduce government spending, 7,000 public sector jobs need to be cut.
Inflation rose to more than 160 percent
The 53-year-old political newcomer Milei has taken over Latin America’s third largest economy in the middle of a serious economic crisis: inflation has risen to more than 160 percent and more than 40 percent of the population lives in poverty.
