Fire on the southern Italian volcanic island of Stromboli: Fanned by strong sirocco winds on Wednesday, a wildfire spread at incredible speed, evacuating houses and bringing people to safety. The fire is said to have started during the shooting of a feature film about the work of the civil defense in which a fire was simulated.
The public TV channel RAI denied that the film production was responsible for the fire. The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing. What is certain is that the fire quickly spread through the forest. According to Italian media, five hectares of bushland have been robbed by the flames. Tourist homes had to be evacuated.
Emergency services fought the flames with fire extinguishers. The fire was extinguished after a few hours.
“We are in constant contact with the fire brigade and the forest manager, who we have activated from the first moment. Our first concern was to get people and objects to safety, after which the Carabinieri will conduct their investigations and pass the results on to the competent authorities,” said Marco Giorgianni, mayor of Lipari Island, to which Stromboli belongs.
