“Fierce fighting” – Ukraine breaks through important defense line

Ukraine says it has breached a Russian defense line near the war-torn city of Bakhmut as part of its counter-offensive. Ukrainian forces had earlier announced that strategically important Klishchiyivka had been recaptured.

“There is heavy fighting in the Bakhmut area (…). The enemy’s defense line has been broken,” Ukrainian Army Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Monday. The Ministry of Defense also published an image on it

Russian troops left a trail of destruction. “There is not a single intact building on which the Ukrainian flag could be raised,” the ministry said, describing the situation on the ground. Ukrainian forces have also released moving images of a bombed forest in the region. You can see the positions of the Russian troops and the bodies of the soldiers left behind. Some of them are indistinguishable from the ground.

70,000 people called Bakhmut home
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the units involved for the recapture of the city of Klishchiivka in the east of the country on Sunday evening. “Today I would especially like to mention the soldiers who are gradually taking back Ukraine’s property, especially in the Bakhmut area.”

The city of Bakhmut, with a pre-war population of about 70,000 people, was captured by Russian forces in May after a costly month-long battle. However, the Ukrainian army immediately began attacking Russian positions from the north and south, gradually reporting smaller territorial gains since then.

The Russian army now faces the threat of being held in a pincer position from both the north and south.
