Up to 15 degrees! – Foehn starts the week, then a cold front brings snow

Date:

The weather remains exciting in Austria: at the beginning of the week a strong southerly wind from Föhn blows through the country, before a cold front in combination with an Italian low brings rain and snow to the mountains on Tuesday. From Wednesday the situation will calm down again – it will be sunnier again!

The wind picked up considerably on Monday evening. According to storm weather center expert Marcus Rubel, stormy wind gusts may occur, especially in the Föhn regions. Warnings are already in effect on Sunday evening.

Mild temperatures thanks to stormy southern Föhn
After Sunday started foggy and cloudy, there will be high fog again in the Danube region and the northeast on Monday. Dense clouds dominate south of the main Alpine ridge. However, in the northern Alps and the southeast the sun can shine occasionally – mainly thanks to a strong to stormy southern foehn.

While it remains largely dry outside the Alps and the Carnic Alps during the day, rain spreads from the west in the afternoon and evening. According to meteorologists from GeoSphere Austria, early temperatures will be between minus 5 and plus 5 degrees. Maximum daytime temperatures between 2 and 6 degrees in fog, otherwise mild at 8 to 14 degrees, even higher in foehn waves.

Snowfall possible in the valleys
Dense clouds will also dominate the weather on Tuesday. It rains or snows heavily, especially in the western and southern mountains. As the day progresses, the precipitation spreads to other parts of the country, while it will become drier again in the west in the afternoon. The snowfall limit is between 800 and 1000 meters, but considerably higher in the southeast. In Upper Carinthia it can temporarily snow in the valleys. The wind is blowing strongly from southern directions in the east. Early temperatures minus 1 to plus 10 degrees. Daily maximum temperatures 6 to 15 degrees, with the highest temperatures in Burgenland.

According to the UWZ, Wednesday will start with a lot of clouds and some showers on the north side of the Alps. But as the day progresses, the weather becomes calmer: it becomes dry and the sun appears more and more often – especially in the western mountains. The wind remains moderate to strong, especially in the Danube area from the west. Maximum daytime temperatures of up to 12 degrees can also be expected here. There should be plenty of sun on Thursday.
