Several hundred people protested in front of the Hessian State Theater in Wiesbaden against a performance by Russian-born soprano Anna Netrebko. It is repeatedly said that the opera star was close to Russian ruler Vladimir Putin.
A total of about 400 protesters gathered for about five hours on Saturday evening, a police spokesman said on Sunday. Everything remained calm and there were no incidents.
Criticism of the war in Ukraine
There were already protests when Netrebko appeared at the 2023 May Festival in Wiesbaden. Due to her alleged close relationship with Russian President Putin, Netrebko, who also holds an Austrian passport, came under criticism after the war of aggression against Ukraine began in February 2022.
Just a few days ago, a concert with Netrebko, scheduled for June 1 in Lucerne, Switzerland, was canceled under pressure from the cantonal government. In the recent past, concerts featuring Netrebko have been canceled in many Western countries.
Netrebko was at the opera ball
Her management always points out that Netrebko spoke out against the war. She has since been invited back. She sang at the State Opera in Berlin in September 2023. In February she was a guest at the Opera Ball in Vienna.
