No help offered – Floyd’s death: second cop sent to jail

Date:

More than two years after the murder of African-American George Floyd in the United States, a second involved ex-cop has gone to prison. He was sentenced Thursday to two and a half years in prison for failing to provide aid.

In February, Thomas Lane, 39, and his colleagues Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, who were also involved, had already been found guilty of violating Floyd’s constitutional civil rights. George Floyd died on May 25, 2020 during a brutal police operation.

Videos show how police officers clamp the unarmed man to the ground. White officer Derek Chauvin even pressed his knee to Floyd’s neck for nine minutes while Floyd begged him to breathe. According to the autopsy, the American lost consciousness and died.

Colleagues did not intervene
Chauvin’s colleagues Alexander Kueng, Tou Thao and Thomas Lane did not intervene in the incident. The federal court in St. Paul has found Lane guilty of failing to provide medical assistance. Kueng and Thao were also found guilty of not trying to stop the violence. While Lane has now been sentenced to two and a half years in prison, the sentences of the other two men have not yet been announced.

Chauvin is already serving his sentence. He was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for murder by a Minneapolis court, and a federal court increased the 46-year-old’s sentence by an additional 21 years in early July. George Floyd’s death had sparked discussions and demonstrations about racism and police brutality in the United States.
