Shortly after midnight there was a garage fire in Schleedorf in the Salzburg Flachgau. During the snowstorm, 130 firefighters were deployed to extinguish the fire.
In the early morning hours, a devastating fire broke out in a garage in Engerreich in Schleedorf (Flachgau). Schleedorf’s local fire chief, Stefan Wesenauer, reports that the emergency call came in shortly after midnight. The fire brigade was immediately alerted, but the journey of the 130 firefighters was an enormous challenge due to the winter weather conditions.
An attempt was made to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher
“The owner and his father tried to fight the fire with a fire extinguisher and suffered smoke poisoning,” Wesenauer reports. The two were taken to the University Hospital of Salzburg by the Red Cross. The extinguishing work proved difficult because the affected house is in a small hamlet where the houses are very close together.
It was only around 3:30 am that the emergency services were able to declare that the fire had been extinguished. Pipes of more than a kilometer long had to be laid for the fire-fighting water. However, the fire brigade was able to protect the outbuildings.
The exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are currently unclear and will be determined by the responsible authorities. The local community is relieved that firefighters were able to protect surrounding buildings.
