An informal tobogganing fun in Vorarlberg ended tragically last night for a group of six students from Great Britain. During the final ride of the evening, a 19-year-old lost control of his bobsled, went off the track and fell into a forest. There the young man crashed into a tree and was seriously injured.
Shortly before midnight, a group of six students from Great Britain went on a night tobogganing trip on the snow-covered slope in Mittelberg/Höfle. By this time, a hard and icy crust had formed on the snow cover. The students slid down the steep and unlit slope several times on a slab bob.
Departure to the adjacent forest
During the final ride, a 19-year-old lost control of the bobsled and drove over an embankment at high speed and crashed into a tree in the adjacent forest. The young student suffered serious head injuries as a result of the accident. He did not respond and had to be rescued at great expense by the Mittelberg-Hirschegg mountain rescue service with the support of the Mittelberg fire brigade.
Rescue by helicopter suitable for night flights
After initial treatment on site, he was flown to the clinic in Kempten, Bavaria, in a helicopter suitable for night flights. The other members of the group were cared for by the Kleinwalsertal crisis intervention team. In total, about 25 people were involved in the rescue operation.
