US President Joe Biden used the massive Russian airstrike on Ukraine to ask Congress for further funding. The 80-year-old warned urgently: not only Ukraine’s future is at stake in this war. Britain is now calling for a “redoubling of efforts”.
“Overnight, Russia launched its largest airstrike on Ukraine since this war began,” Biden said in a written statement on Friday. “There is much more at stake in this battle than just Ukraine,” he warned.
The full statement to read:
“It affects the entire NATO alliance, the security of Europe and the future of transatlantic relations.” With its military assistance, the US had helped save many lives, he pointed out.
Biden holds Congress accountable
“But unless Congress takes urgent action in the new year, we will not be able to continue delivering the weapons and vital air defense systems that Ukraine needs to protect its people. Congress must act, and without further delay.”
If dictators and autocrats are allowed to wreak havoc in Europe, the risk increases that the US will be directly involved. “We must not abandon Ukraine,” he warned. “History will harshly punish those who do not heed the call for freedom.”
Russia targets civilians
In Ukraine, more than 30 people were killed and more than 150 injured in unprecedented aerial bombardments just before the New Year. The army in Kiev called it the “most massive airstrike” on Ukraine since the start of the war – almost two years.
The US is considered Ukraine’s most important ally in the fight against the Russian invasion. However, the funds previously approved by Congress for Kiev have largely been used up. What will happen next with US support for Ukraine is completely open.
The release of further funds is being blocked by a dispute in the House of Representatives between Republicans and Biden’s Democrats. Republicans are standing in the way of approving new aid because in return they demand that Biden tighten asylum policy in the US.
Britain supplies missiles
London has announced the delivery of anti-aircraft missiles in response to Russia’s unprecedented aggression, British Defense Minister Grant Shapps wrote on Friday in the online service X. According to his department, there are 200 missiles.
However, the scope of the measures is far from sufficient to enable Ukriane to defend itself effectively. By comparison, according to Ukrainian information, Russia fired more than 150 missiles and drones on Friday morning. “Now is the time for the free world to stand together and for us to redouble our efforts to give Ukraine what it needs to win,” Shapps said.
