The Vienna Boys’ Choir is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is known and loved all over the world as cultural ambassadors of our country. Together with the Vienna Choir Girls, our music institution will receive the European Culture Prize in June 2024.
Financial distress threatens survival
But now there is great concern about one of Austria’s most valuable flagships: the Goldkehlchen are in financial distress that threatens their survival! There is currently a shortage of around 800,000 euros to maintain the operation of the choir boys.
The background: During the corona pandemic, all tours from which the non-profit organization was previously largely financed had to be canceled. “We need more support”
Now the board of the Vienna Boys’ Choir is sounding the alarm: “Despite the help that the city of Vienna has already provided, we can no longer do this alone, we urgently need further support,” says Erich Arthold, chairman of the Boys’ Choir. who only took office a year ago, dramatic situation.
“We have already had numerous discussions with the ministries, most recently we also presented our problems to Chancellor Karl Nehammer. He promised to try to find a solution,” Arthold continued.
Girls will have the same opportunities from the fall
The Republic has already funded the teachers for regular classes at the Vienna Boys’ Choir School, as it has done for all private schools in Austria.
From September 2024, attending lower secondary school will also be open to Viennese choir girls, who will then have the same opportunities and opportunities as their male colleagues. With the addition of the girls, the training offer for all children and young people from 6 to 18 years on the Augarten campus is complete.
