After a violent storm, waves up to nine meters high are expected in parts of the American states of California and Oregon. There are “extremely dangerous conditions,” the National Weather Service NWS emphasized on Friday.
“Strong waves and life-threatening rip currents pose an exceptional risk of drowning at sea and damage to coastal structures,” forecasters warned. Torrents can drag swimmers and surfers into the sea.
Huge waves north of Los Angeles
Earlier, a huge wave washed away several people and vehicles and flooded a hotel in Ventura County, north of metropolitan Los Angeles. Video footage showed the meter-high wave washing over a seawall in the city of Ventura, dragging people several meters away. “This wave took eight people to local hospitals,” the local fire brigade wrote in the online networks. Other passersby were able to escape to safety.
The Los Angeles Times newspaper reported that the high waves also destroyed parts of the interior of the nearby Hotel Inn on the Beach and shattered windows. The hotel was therefore half a meter under water.
Flood hazard
According to the forecast, high surf was expected along the entire coast. There is a risk of flooding until Saturday evening. “Flooding of low-lying, vulnerable coastal areas such as parking lots, beaches and sidewalks is likely around the time of high tide,” the NWS warned. Large waves can “cause injuries, wash people off beaches and rocks and capsize small boats near shore.”
Firefighters and authorities worked to secure beaches in Ventura on Friday. Video footage showed excavators building a large wall to protect coastal homes. Officials provided sandbags for flood protection.
Climate change causes extreme weather
In the summer, the western United States experienced an extreme heat wave with record temperatures. The following winter was unusually wet. According to experts, global warming is making extreme weather events more common.
