More than two years after the attack on Ukraine, the Kremlin has officially acknowledged for the first time that Russia is at war. “We are in a state of war. Yes, it started as a special military operation, but as soon as this group was formed and the collective West became a participant on the side of Ukraine, this became a war for us,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview on Friday.
Peskov made these comments after the aggressor state carried out probably the largest joint attack on the neighboring country’s energy infrastructure overnight.
“Liberation” as a war goal
He stated that the aim of the war would be the complete “liberation” of the four regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson, which the country had annexed a year and a half ago in violation of international law. With Ukraine facing an acute shortage of weapons, Russia has made progress on the front in recent weeks. However, it is far from having full control over these four Ukrainian regions.
Doubts about Ukraine’s right to exist
Peskov also once again questioned the existence of Ukraine. Russia cannot allow the existence on its borders of a country that is ready to use any means to take over the Crimean Peninsula. Exactly ten years ago, the Ukrainian peninsula was suddenly conquered and annexed by Russia.
Russia’s actions that violate international law have not been recognized by the international community. Western states support Ukraine, which is now also an EU candidate country, in its legitimate right to self-defense.
