Parental leave is the legal right to leave: “During this time there is no obligation to work and the employer does not have to pay wages,” explains labor law expert Jasmin Haindl from the Vienna Chamber of Labor. “If only one parent goes on maternity leave, this is possible until the end of the child’s 22nd month of life, and longer if the parents share the maternity leave – up to a maximum of 24 months.”
