Since the start of the ski season, the number of accidents on snow slopes has increased. De Kroon has investigated for you why this is the case and how you can reduce the risk.
“Accident on the Großglockner – skiing accident: boy ‘mows down’ friend during descent”, “Helicopter operation – skiing accident in Carinthia: child and holidaymaker injured”. Not a day goes by without a skiing accident being reported. A striking number of winter sports enthusiasts have regularly had accidents on the slopes of Carinthia in recent weeks.
There is a lack of self-evaluation
Michael Bachlechner, regional training manager of the Alpine Police, appeals to the common sense of skiers: “There is often a lack of control over the skis. Many people travel far too fast, have no skiing fitness and do not pay attention to the conditions on the slopes. Some ski areas live only on artificial snow, so there are no autumn areas outside the zone.” Another reason is the many beginners who are starting the new ski season. There is a lack of knowledge and experience, which can easily lead to an accident.
Many skiing accidents in recent weeks
As in the example above, tragic scenes occurred on the Großglockner a few days ago. While swinging to the right, a 16-year-old skier slipped and collided with his friend who was skiing in front of him. The victim, of the same age, was taken to hospital by helicopter. And on the Katschberg recently, an eleven-year-old student and a 55-year-old holidaymaker from the Czech Republic collided on a ski path between two slopes. Both suffered injuries.
This way you will experience an accident-free skiing day
“It is important that the material is kept in good condition and that the service is carried out. Very important: warm up thoroughly before the brisc goes down the mountain! Take the first few descents at an easy pace to prepare your body for the load. And if you notice that you are tired in the morning, you should avoid the slopes,” Bachlechner concludes.
