Southern Peru was rocked by a strong earthquake on Thursday morning. The quake, measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck at 7:02 a.m. (local time) at a depth of 217 kilometers, according to the USGS. There were initially no reports of casualties or damage.
The epicenter was therefore near Ayaviri, the capital of the province of Melgar, west of Lake Titicaca in the south of the Andean country.
The Geophysical Institute of Peru estimated the magnitude of the quake at 6.9. This was also felt in the regions of Arequipa, Cusco, Tacna and Puno, the radio station RPP reported.
Violent earthquakes continue to occur in Peru. The reason: The entire west coast of the American double continent lies on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, which is known for its seismicity. About 85 percent of all earthquakes worldwide are recorded there.
