Even a ‘winter wonderland’ has its pitfalls: ill-equipped and without any understanding of the mountain conditions, a German couple wanted to hike the Dolomitensteig in Hinterstoder. The tourists promptly became stuck in the deep snow and had to be rescued by the police helicopter.
A 26-year-old and her 21-year-old brother from Germany went on a mountain hike on Saturday. They wanted to hike the Dolomitensteig in the municipality of Hinterstoder.
Due to the steep terrain and the current snow situation, the two holidaymakers could neither move forward nor backward at 3 p.m. and called the emergency call.
“Dragonfly” flew there
The crew of the Libelle Upper Austria police helicopter rescued the uninjured mountaineers from the steep terrain.
No winter equipment
The hikers were poorly equipped because they did not have proper winter equipment (no appropriate winter hiking clothes, no crampons, no ice axe). The tour planning was also poor.
“Surprised” by the deep snow
They could not cope with the current snow and weather conditions and said they were “surprised” by the deep snow.
