The new year begins for Israel and Ukraine as the old one ended: with heavy rocket fire. As the Times of Israel reported on New Year’s Eve, the terrorist organization Hamas fired more than 20 rockets. A huge crash also took place in Eastern Europe.
Most Hamas rockets were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. Sirens sounded in several places in the center of the country and in the south of Israel.
Hamas’ armed wing said the shelling was in response to “mass killings of civilians” in the Gaza Strip. According to emergency services, there were initially no injuries, the Times of Israel reported.
Suicide drones in Odessa
Russia reportedly fired several suicide drones at a residential building in Odessa, Ukraine, around midnight on New Year’s Eve, killing several civilians. An official number is not yet known.
In addition, the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv was hit hard on New Year’s Eve. Residents were startled by multiple air raid sirens as waves of ballistic missiles and attack drones descended on the city center. According to Ukrainian authorities, almost 30 people were injured and private homes, hospitals and a hotel were damaged.
