Police have arrested another suspect in connection with a possible planned terrorist attack on Cologne Cathedral. Officials announced this on New Year’s Day. This is a 41-year-old dual national.
He was taken into custody in Bochum on New Year’s Eve. He has both German and Turkish citizenship, a spokesman said.
The number of suspects taken into custody in Germany following the terror alert has increased to five. On New Year’s Eve, the police announced that they had arrested three people. Another suspect was already arrested at Christmas.
Large network suspected
The background to the measures is that the police received information shortly before Christmas about a planned Islamist terrorist attack on the Cologne Cathedral. The police assumed there was a larger network.
Security measures in the cathedral were subsequently greatly increased. There was a large police presence on New Year’s Eve. There would also have been plans for St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Shortly before Christmas, three terror suspects were arrested in the Vienna district.
Even after New Year’s Eve, Cologne Cathedral will be protected by the police until further notice. “Security checks will still take place at the cathedral,” a police spokesperson said on Monday. “How long this measure will be maintained is currently being investigated.” So we will continue to see police officers at the cathedral for the time being.
