Plane collision – authorities now investigating burned-out wreckage

Date:

Following the fatal collision between a Japanese passenger plane and a coast guard aircraft, an investigation is now underway into the cause of the accident. The burnt-out wreckage needs to be carefully examined.

The Japanese news agency Kyodo reported this on Wednesday. According to the aircraft manufacturer, the Airbus A350-900 was only two years old. As reported, the Japan Airlines (JAL) passenger plane collided with the coast guard plane immediately after landing at Haneda Airport in Tokyo on Tuesday morning. Both caught fire (see video above).

Pilot rescued with serious injuries
The accident killed five people on board the coast guard aircraft. Only the pilot of the Bombardier DHC8-300 was rescued with serious injuries. In addition, the 379 passengers on board the other plane, which was on fire, were rescued. No one was seriously injured.

The flaming inferno was brought under control more than eight hours after the collision. Aircraft manufacturer Airbus expressed its condolences on Tuesday for all those affected. He will provide technical support to the relevant authorities investigating the incident. The Japan Transport Safety Board, a responsible government agency, is currently investigating the burned wreckage.

Dozens of flights cancelled
All runways at Japan’s busiest airport were temporarily closed on Tuesday. With the exception of the runway where the accident occurred, these have now been reopened. JAL canceled more than forty domestic flights to and from Haneda on Wednesday, and All Nippon Airways (ANA) also canceled dozens of flights.
