Disappeared again – Chinese balloons crossed Taiwan

Date:

Three Chinese balloons crossed the island of Taiwan and then disappeared at several points. This is reported by the Taiwanese Ministry of Defense. The balloons flew at least 105 nautical miles (the equivalent of about 194 kilometers) southwest of Ching Chuan Kang, where a major air base is located.

It was the first time balloons had flown over the island since a flock appeared over the strait between Taiwan and China last month (see video above). Taiwan’s Ministry of Defense said on Tuesday it had discovered a total of four balloons above the strait, three of which flew over the center of the island. The ministry does not want to say what the balloons were used for. It was previously stated that their main purpose was to monitor the weather.

But the public also thinks about espionage. This possibility became a global issue in February 2023 when an alleged Chinese surveillance balloon was shot down in the United States. The Chinese government explained at the time that it was a civilian plane that had accidentally lost its way.

Elections on January 13
There will be presidential and parliamentary elections in Taiwan on January 13. The government is currently on high alert for Chinese activities, both military and political. The Chinese government still claims the island as its own territory and has threatened an invasion if ‘reunification’ is not possible. There are also international concerns about war. This would, among other things, have serious consequences for the global economy, as important trade routes pass through the region.
