World in fear – Hezbollah chief’s speech: Is the war in Gaza escalating?

Date:

On Tuesday, the so-called number two of the Islamist Palestinian organization Hamas, Saleh al-Aruri, was killed in a drone strike allegedly carried out by Israel. Iran-backed Hezbollah threatens retaliation: “This crime will never go unanswered or punished,” the country announced. A short time later, more than 100 people were killed at General Soleimani’s grave in Iran. On the fourth anniversary of his death they had made a pilgrimage there. The world is now watching with fascination the speech of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah: there is great fear that the Gaza war will spread.

Shattered windows, charred cars, bombed-out facades: a picture of destruction was still visible on the outskirts of the Lebanese capital Beirut on Wednesday. They are the remains of a targeted attack in the middle of the densely populated residential area. Vegetables and confectionery are usually sold here. However, on Tuesday evening the area, considered a stronghold of the Iran-backed Shiite militia Hezbollah, was targeted by a drone strike. The second-highest leader of the Islamist Hamas abroad, Saleh al-Arouri, was assassinated.

A total of seven Hamas members and allies were killed who apparently met in an apartment. Unlike other similar attacks, there were no innocent casualties. Israel believes Arouri was involved in planning the devastating terrorist attack on October 7 in Israel’s border area with the Gaza Strip. Video footage also showed Arouri and other leading Hamas members watching television footage of the incidents that day, celebrating and praying.

He is the first Hamas leader to be targeted since October 7. At the start of the Gaza War, Israel announced it would eliminate the organization’s military and political leadership. Arouri’s murder has now brought the Gaza war to the Lebanese capital. So far, only the south of the country has been involved in mutual shelling. The targeted killing of the Hamas leader on Lebanese territory could change that. Because Hezbollah, backed by Iran, promptly threatened retaliation.

The Hezbollah chief’s speech begins
“All eyes are on what Nasrallah will say and to what extent Hezbollah will respond,” writes the Lebanese daily L’Orient Today ahead of the long-awaited speech by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

He started by expressing his condolences to the relatives after the tragic incident in Iran on Wednesday. More than a hundred people were killed in two explosions in the city of Kerman on Wednesday. ‘On Friday, God willing, I will address the brothers and sisters during a memorial service. “I will discuss certain current issues on Friday instead of tonight – if God allows me to live until then,” Nasrallah said. The Lebanese politician strongly condemned the “obvious Israeli attack” on Beirut’s southern cities.

Saleh al-Aruri sea Nasrallah “Märtyer”
Saleh al-Aruri, who was killed on Tuesday and described as “number two” of the Islamist-Palestinian organization Hamas, was a “martyr.” “Your blood, your sacrifice (…) will have positive consequences for Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and the entire region,” Nasrallah promised.
