Hours after Russia announced it would use its brand new Yastreb-AV radar system for the first time in the war zone in Ukraine, it went up in flames. The Ukrainian Armed Forces released a video allegedly showing the destruction of military equipment.
The Yastreb-AV radar system was intended to detect HIMARS artillery systems and track missiles to the launch site. Russia expected the operation in Ukraine to increase efficiency and “increase survivability on the battlefield,” a Kremlin statement said.
System discovered during reconnaissance mission
But the system, which cost 250 million dollars (about 230 million euros), was not in use for long. According to their own statements, Ukrainian special forces discovered the Yastreb-AV during a reconnaissance mission – where exactly was not revealed. On Platform X, the defense forces described the attack as a ‘perfect shot’.
Message from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense:
Soldier apparently survived the attack
The Russian system was hit by a modern HIMARS missile launcher from the US, the post continues. It is unclear whether the Yastreb AV was actually destroyed. However, the video suggests that it suffered at least significant damage. Despite the blast, one soldier may have saved himself; you see a person running from the vehicle after the attack.
Ukraine believes that Yastreb-AV is Russia’s most modern and capable radar system, as explained below the video on Facebook. It was supposed to be used against HIMARS, but is now said to have been hit by a rocket launcher of this type.
Russia fails in attacks on HIMARS
Since the start of the war, the Russian military has failed to destroy even one of Ukraine’s 39 HIMARS systems, explains military expert David Ax of Forbes. Drones have occasionally discovered the system, but attacks from the Russian side are usually too slow or carried out by insufficiently trained soldiers.
