Rocket hail – South Korean island is being evacuated “preventively”.

Date:

The North Korean regime’s latest weapons tests have alarmed the security forces of its southern neighbor. The South Korean government has now ordered the evacuation of Yeonpyeong Island.

“About 200 shots were fired by North Korea (at) Yeonpyeong Island,” a South Korean Defense Ministry official said at a news conference. Officials on the island, which is just 10 kilometers (6 miles) from North Korea, said residents had been urged to seek safety. The island off the west coast was the target of a North Korean artillery attack in 2010. Four people died then.

North Korea wants to intensify production of rocket launchers
It is a “preventive measure”. North Korean state media had previously reported that leader Kim Jong Un had called for an expansion of missile launcher production during a factory visit – in preparation for a “military confrontation” with South Korea and the US.

Shortly before that, the US government announced that North Korea had recently delivered ballistic missiles and rocket launchers to Russia, some of which were used in the recent attacks on Ukraine.

US: North Korean missiles used against Ukraine
White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Thursday that some of the missiles and rocket launchers were used in attacks on December 30 and January 2. Kirby called this a “significant and worrying escalation” in the conflict in Ukraine. They also violated UN sanctions imposed on the East Asian country.
